Northumberland is a landscape offering a unique opportunity for escaping not only to a different place, but to a different time. History has shaped this wonderfully varied landscape, and remains there to experience – from the grandeur that was the Roman Empire at the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall to the plethora of castles and fortified houses (more than any other English county) nearby.

These were once debatable lands patrolled by roving bands of raiders known as the “Border Reivers” – The farmhouse at Falstone Barns itself is a Bastle, a fortified house designed to protect the inhabitants from Reiver attack. Thankfully, today’s Northumbrians are a more welcoming bunch!
